Goa Lawah, also called the Bat Cave Temple, is a very important temple for Balinese Hindus. It is one of Bali's nine key temples, protecting against dark spirits from the ocean. The temple was founded in the 11th century by the priest Mpu Kuturan, and some of its shrines are still from that time.

Located on Bali's southeast coast, about 10 km from Klungkung and Candidasa, Goa Lawah is close to the main road to other popular destinations in East Bali. The temple is built around the entrance of a cave that is home to many bats. Large banyan trees stand at the entrance, and inside, you’ll find shrines with dragon motifs, symbolizing the balance of the universe.

There’s a local legend that the cave connects to Besakih Temple, but this hasn't been proven. Mornings are a good time to visit as many locals come to pray. The temple is busy due to its easy access but remains a beautiful place to experience Bali's culture. You can also visit during the temple’s anniversary, celebrated every 210 days. The temple area has souvenir shops and small restaurants (warungs) where you can buy snacks and drinks.
